I work from a number of different sources for my imagery; quick sketches, watercolor studies, studio drawings and snap shots. I am much more likely to compose a painting from a quick thumbnail sketch and not think very much about what a place actually looked like. In fact, each time I study landscape, I am so overwhelmed with the remarkable beauty and complexity of the real world that I have to consciously resign myself to the creation of an abstraction. The distillation of an intangible quality is what I strive to convey in my paintings. I am always seeking out the essence of what makes a particular image magic.
